Issue with some retail terminals continues to affect purchases
Some customers of select financial institutions continue to have their Interac Debit chip-and-PIN card transactions declined at specific retailers. This is not a debit card issue but is an issue at some merchants who use VeriFone point of sale terminals requiring a software update. Transactions requiring the use of a PIN may be declined however, "contactless" (no PIN, just tap) transactions and ATM access continue to function normally. IfF you experience this issue you may: Split your purchase to allow for contactless transactons (under $100 each) Have cash on hand as a back-up until this issue is resolved
Some of the merchants affected include: Burger King; Co-op; Costco, Esso, and FAS Gas merchants (Gilbarco; La Senza; Lowe's Lululemon; Starbucks; Tim Hortons; Victoria's Secret Repeated attempts to use the CHIP® feature may result in your card being blocked. If this happens, please call your branch and we can assist with unblocking your card. Alternatively, it will automatically reset to an unblock status after 24 hours.
Please click here to view the customer alert issued by at Interac®

Intermittent Interac Debit Chip-and-PIN card purchase declines
We are aware of an issue with VeriFone terminals causing customers of select financial institutions and credit unions to have some of their Interac Debit chip-and PIN card transactions declined.
The declines are happening at some merchants who use VeriFone point of sale terminals. This is not a debit card issue but is an issue with terminals at the point-of-sale. The failure of some VeriFone terminals to meet the Interac® mandated changes of Combined Data Authentication is impacting some customers who have newer debit cards. Transactions with these debit cards will be declined at some merchants who require the use of the PIN. However, “contactless” (no PIN) transactions and ATM access continue to function normally. Repeated attempts to use the CHIP® feature may result in your card being blocked. If this happens, please visit us in branch and we can assist with unblocking your card. Alternatively, it will automatically reset to an unblock status after 24 hours.
Please click here to view the customer alert issued by at Interac®
The issue is not impacting all Interac Debit chip-and-PIN cardholders, all merchants, or all terminals. The Interac Debit systems are working normally for all cardholders at non-impacted VeriFone terminals, and effected cardholders can still use their Interac Flash enabled card or device to complete an eligible transaction.
Which merchants have the affected Verifone POS terminals?
Canada: Global Payments (Loblaw Brand merchants), Moneris (Costco, La Senza, Victoria Secret/Pink, Bath and Body Works, Esso, Petro Canada) and other small merchants USA: NYCE network (Walmart, Costco, Shell, McDonalds and other merchants)
Following are some options to provide an interim solution if you experience an issue with your debit card: • Split your transaction in two to allow for two contactless (tap, no PIN required) transactions • If you receive a CAPK error or other error message on the PIN Pad, leave the card in the terminal to complete the process • In some cases, you may have to press the “OK” button on the PIN Pad, but this is not consistently the action required.
Current state of issue/fix: • The testing of the terminal software fix at one of the highly impacted merchants is proving to be successful. The merchant is working to roll-out to additional stores shortly. • Other merchants continue to make progress towards the implementation of a fix. • Interac® continues to work with affected merchants to press for implementation of the solution.

OMISTA to observe Earth Hour a Day Early
OMISTA is observing Earth Hour early Friday, March 29 from 10am – 11am
As a #BCorp OMISTA embraces a triple bottom line of PEOPLE, PLANET, PROFIT. Since our branches will not be open during the global action for Earth Hour on Sat, March 30, we will observe it Friday, March 29 from 10am-11am. We are switching off all non-essential lights and electronics, but still open for business!
Earth Hour is the world's largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring millions of people to take action for our planet and nature. Most of the resources we use come from the environment. That’s why we must do our part to protect the world around us! People are just one part of Earth’s vast web of life. Let’s get back in touch with our roots and nurture nature by helping to conserve wildlife and their habitats.
You too can “switch off” in solidarity with global efforts to secure nature and our home, 30 March, 8:30pm.

Riverside-Albert Town Hall February 11
Monday, February 11, 6:30pm at Riverside-Albert Recreation Centre
All welcome to attend
OMISTA Credit Union is having a Town Hall meeting for residents of the Riverside-Albert and Alma areas. This will be an opportunity to learn more about what services OMISTA can offer the area, as well as gauge the level of much-needed, additional interest and support from residents.
We have received positive feedback on providing banking services to these communities, however to date, only a few residents and businesses have brought their business to OMISTA. A strong show of support is needed by the end of March to continue the ongoing work.
OMISTA Credit Union’s temporary pop-up location at the Visitor Information Centre in Hillsborough on Steeves Street has reopened from 9am – 4pm Tuesdays until March 12.

Our Temporary Pop-Up Location Will Reopen After the Holidays.
We are planning future Town Hall meetings with updates in the New Year. Watch the Villages’ Facebook pages for the announcement. We continue down the path of determining the level of support from residents from Alma, Riverside-Albert, and Hillsborough areas. We are excited about a mutually beneficial partnership that will allow OMISTA to provide on-going banking services in the area. To deliver on this vision, we need residents and businesses to bank local and show commitment to doing business together. Thank you for the support demonstrated to date in fairness, trust, and equality in banking.

OMISTA CEO Announces Retirement
I have some news to share with you. I will be retiring from my position as OMISTA’s Chief Executive Officer effective December 31, 2017. I have thoroughly enjoyed this job and the professionals I work with. After 26 years in the Credit Union system, and 14 years prior in the banking and education sectors, I’m ready for a new challenge. I feel it is an opportune time in my life to embark on new pursuits and interests.
My 13 years with OMISTA have been extremely rewarding and I am pleased with the growth and advancement of our Credit Union system during my tenure. Our values, based on honestly and trust, resonate with our members and the public now more than ever. I’ll be moving on to new pursuits and interests knowing that your Credit Union is managed by a team of talented and skilled professionals. I look forward to the remaining 6 months in my current role working with them as we continue to evolve and grow. Our CEO Search Committee hope to announce my replacement by late fall.
I thank OMISTA’s Board of Directors for their direction and collaboration throughout the years and our employees for their passion and belief in providing honest financial advice. Although I am happily looking forward to my retirement, I will genuinely miss being part of the OMISTA team. Many thanks to you, our members, for your trust and desire to be a part of something bigger … a better way to bank.
