Winning with our Community
Since we are locally owned, we believe our success is directly related to the success of our Greater Moncton. That is why OMISTA is committed to reinvesting into the growth of our shared communities and economy. Through this approach, we have been fortunate to support many charitable initiatives in the Moncton region.
In the last decade, OMISTA has contributed over $192 897 in philanthropic gifts. In 2006-2007 alone, OMISTA donated over $15 000 in monetary donations, scholarships and bursaries as we continued our focus on education, health, social services, and youth programs. In the last decade we have contributed close to $250 000 in philanthropic gifts. And as in every year, our employees enhanced our contributions through payroll deductions redirected to various charities, most recently the Greater Moncton United Way. Offering financial aid to those pursuing higher education empowers students to successfully obtain their career objectives. And it is for this reason OMISTA awarded fifteen $500 bursaries in June to owners, children of owners, or grandchildren of owners attending eligible post-secondary institutions. Since 2000, $67 500 has been awarded in OMISTA Credit Union bursaries to deserving students. The OMISTA Credit Union Bursary Program is designed to assist students in financial need. This is the primary consideration however leadership, not only in academic pursuits but also in citizenship and volunteerism, are also considerations. Recently throughout the media we have heard how the local foods banks are dangerously low on resources and need a public commitment of support. And as the cost of living rises, more and more families must make unfortunate sacrifices during the Holiday Season. When most children are enjoying their holiday treats, and unwrapping presents, others may not have gifts to unwrap or warm meals to satisfy their hunger. Every season, area Credit Unions engage in two joint initiatives; Bagging It For the Food Banks and the Gift of Christmas. Volunteers from OMISTA, other area Credit Unions, and C103 and XL96 actively support our local food banks by bagging groceries at Co-op stores across the region in exchange for cash and non-perishable food donations. Including the proceeds from the on-air auction, this past fiscal year a total of $3325 was raised thanks to area residents. These same volunteer groups encourage owners and the public to make donations of new toys and other gifts to local families in need during the holidays. Donations are distributed by the Greater Moncton Salvation Army and other local charities. Last year’s effort raised meant $1600 in cash, over 500 gifts, and 5 shopping carts full of non-perishable food items for these families. Thank you to everyone for making this years Gift of Christmas a success and we hope to see you this year at any one of our branches. OMISTA Credit Union is a proud supporter of the thINK FOOD program throughout Greater Moncton. The thINK FOOD project diverts waste from landfill sites, through recycling used printer cartridges and cell phones, and alleviates hunger by raising funds for local food banks. Used items collected in our branches are sorted at a central location and sold to the remanufacturing industry where they are refurbished for consumer purchase. thINK FOOD operates at no cost to food banks and generates funds for alleviating hunger, allowing food banks to spend all related funds on their greatest necessities. Every day, as an organization we are encouraging and contributing to the growth and success of our communities. In the last decade, OMISTA has contributed over $192 897 in philanthropic gifts. Our goal is to empower the growth of our region, our owners and OMISTA as an organization.
